NutraCast: Safety considerations for dietary supplement manufacturers
The peer-reviewed publication provides a comprehensive overview of safety assessment principles to consider when supporting the safety of dietary ingredients or supplements.
Sirois said that after a member suggested a guide that would compare how companies evaluate dietary ingredient supplement safety, he got to work on what he calls "a labor of love".
"The paper kind of covers all of the regulatory requirements and the best practices throughout the life cycle of a product, manufacturing, packaging, labeling and monitoring adverse events…we tried to do this kind of soup-to-nuts overview of everything to consider if you are a manufacturer and put it all in one place when you're looking at safety of ingredients and dietary supplements."
In terms of the state of GMP compliance, Sirois said consumer trust is top of mind for industry.
“I think the vast majority of the industry itself is committed to maintaining robust adherence to the GMPs," he explained. "And certainly consumer trust is a responsibility that our members take very seriously.
“You do see articles that tend to make the headlines about companies that are not following the GMPs and unfortunately that oftentimes might paint the industry with a with a broad brush, but I think certainly our members and I think the vast majority of folks in the supplement industry are committed to this [compliance] and to putting out quality products.”
