Life Extension turns best-selling Neuro-Mag into gummies
Trademarked Gummy Science Neuro-Mag, the new product consists of orange-flavored bites and caters to an increasing demand among consumers for supplements delivered via gummies.
“We wanted to offer customers a high-quality option when choosing support for their memory and cognitive performance, especially for those who have a harder time taking traditional forms of supplements,” said Glenn MacEachern, Life Extension’s vice president of product development. “And offering magnesium in gummy bites that are also sugar-free seemed like a no-brainer.”
Increasing consumer desire for gummies aligns with economic data. Grand View Research estimates that the global gummy market size is expected to grow nearly 12% from 2024 to 2030. In 2023 the market size was valued at $24 billion.
The survey
The ingredient behind Gummy Science Neuro-Mag is responsible for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body.
Michael A. Smith, MD, Life Extension’s director of education, said magnesium L-threonate supports part of the brain that may need more attention, especially as people age. This special form of magnesium aids in short-term memory, recall speed and overall cognitive health.
“It’s never too early to be proactive about supporting memory health, and magnesium L-threonate is an excellent way to help boost your brain game,” Dr. Smith said.
Keeping the brain sharp is a primary goal for consumers over the age of 61, according to a 2023 Life Extension survey. Of the 7,000 peopled polled by the company, 90% were interested in taking a brain health supplement—with memory being a top priority for respondents (76%), brain performance a close second (72%) and mental sharpness coming in third (69%).
Despite these responses, less than half said they take a brain health supplement. That may be due in part to a supplement’s delivery method.
Life Extension said its gummies can offer the maximum health benefits without sacrificing taste and quality. It added that some other companies have found this quality to be elusive for their brands. The Gummy Science Neuro-Mag contains the same magnesium L-threonate dosage as Neuro-Mag capsules and powder but with a “pleasing taste,” MacEachern said.
Crucial for the brain and nervous systems
Dubbed the ‘mighty mineral', Magnesium L-threonate is necessary for energy generation in cells, protein production, gene regulation, and bone and teeth maintenance. It is also critical for the functioning of the brain and nervous systems.
According to an analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) between 2011 and 2014, which included 2,508 participants aged 60 years and older, total magnesium was associated with significantly higher cognitive scores.
Magnesium intervention is also correlated with neuroprotective effects against oxidative stress and hippocampal neuronal damage in mice. A 2022 study suggested magnesium could be a promising therapeutic agent for the remediation of neuronal damage associated with neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s.
