"The possibilities are endless:" New technology converts bioactive oils into water-soluble powders
Beneficial oils like omega fatty acids, MCT’s (medium-chain triglycerides) and fat-soluble vitamins have traditionally been confined to a narrow scope of supplement applications due to their lipophilic nature. However, Itay Shafat, PhD, Scientific Director, Capsoil Foodtech by Prodalim, said there may be some new options thanks to the company's new platform.
Prodalim Resources has advanced the capacity for mixing oil and water by developing ultra-fine, water-soluble powders out of natural oils. This innovation presents new possibilities for integrating beneficial nutritional oils, fat-soluble vitamins, and lipid-based nutrients into a broadened range of functional foods and beverages.
Capsoil’s technology also targets the dietary supplement space, giving formulators new capabilities for incorporating lipid-based ingredients such as omega-3 into a dry pill, capsule, or sachet formats rather than as an oil or softgel.
The science behind the tech
“Our research has shown a few things. First of all, our powders protect the nutrients within. So if you are using a model of gastrointestinal tract, you can actually do that in the tube in your lab and you compare the oil versus our powders made from that oil. You see that the degradation of the actives, we demonstrated this for oregano oil that has two actives– thymol and carvacrol. And we've shown that the survivability of these functional items grows tremendously if done using our powders. Another example is for astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant. It is also used as a colorant. When oxidized, it loses its color, becoming pinker and pinker until it degrades completely. We've actually shown that using our powders, astaxanthin is much more stable and for longer periods of time. Other studies were done to show better bioavailability. So we’ve shown better bioavailability for vitamin D, we've shown better bioavailability for omega-3, we've shown by the bioavailability of CBD – CBD is a different issue – but our technology was shown again and again to improve the bioavailability.” Shafat added that the improved bioavailability translates into lower dose requirements. “Further clinical trials are in the pipeline that will allow our innovative powdered formats to open the doors to new advances in functional product diversity.”
