Patented-Green Coffee Extract Achieves Self-Affirmed GRAS

Last updated on

Coffee is one of the most ubiquitous beverages enjoyed for its taste, aroma and stimulating properties provided by the presence of caffeine.  However, the unroasted green coffee bean is also a rich source of phytonutrients that support metabolic health.

Vidya Herbs, Inc. is an herbal extract manufacturer headquartered in Bangalore, India that, over the years, has developed an impressive line of extracts derived from coffee such as caffeine and protein.  Perhaps the most notable coffee extract currently produced by Vidya is CGA-7™, named for the extract containing all seven isomers of chlorogenic acid.  The ingredient is supported by a newly published human clinical trial1 and is protected by U.S. Patent 9,962,356.

The extract recently achieved self-affirmed GRAS due to the publication of both the human clinical trial as well as another safety study conducted on the extract that facilitated the review by an expert panel.  “We are excited to share this milestone to improve access to CGA-7 for product development teams interested in using green coffee in their finished products,” said Steve Geiger, Vice President of Sales and Operations for Vidya’s U.S. division.

Vidya’s strengths in coffee extracts stem from the ownership of its coffee estate and processing facility in Chikmagalur, India. Here the coffee goes from harvest to dried beans that can then be extracted for nutraceutical applications in Vidya’s Bangalore facilities.

CGA-7 is primed for diverse applications since it is cold-water-soluble, non-GMO, free of the major 8 allergens (milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans), and ready for formulation in capsules, tablets, softgels, powders, RTDs and functional food.

Those interested evaluating CGA-7 for product development purposes can request samples from Vidya Herbs’ Red Bank, New Jersey office via e-mail (vasb@ivqlnureofhfn.pbz) or phone at (732) 784-1587.
