NutraCast: The power of resistant starch—beyond gut health
In 2021 Dr. Chris Damman joined Supergut after spending 5 years leading the Gut Health, Microbiome and Functional Food Initiative at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Today the gastroenterologist serves as Supergut’s chief medical & science officer, using his background to spearhead Supergut’s clinical validation efforts and work with the product development team on new health solutions that focus on resistant starch.
Damman pointed out that resistant starch can impact everything from appetite to how quickly our stomach empties and even glucose. “So really, really powerful mechanisms that that fiber taps into.”
While there is a developing understanding of the pathways that exist between the gut and how it’s connected to the brain, metabolism, inflammation and immune system, Damman said research and consumer education must continue.
“So I think the areas where probably more consumer education needs to happen are around how fiber can truly impact things like sleep and mood, and how full we feel, weight, blood sugar control, and perhaps inflammation. So the list goes on and on. It's just so fundamental. There's the old adage, ‘You are what you eat’ and that is incredibly profound and incredibly true. And fiber is one of those things that's part of our food and one of those things that profoundly impacts our general, overall health,” said Damman.
