NutraCast: Improving CBD bioavailability with SmartSorb delivery technology
On average, ingested CBD has a bioavailability of 6-19%. This is because CBD is not readily absorbed when ingested and as a result, most of it is excreted due to the fact that CBD is fat-soluble.
But one firm founded by researchers and scientists from the likes of Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, Schiff Nutrition, and Colorado State University is hoping to change that. The group recently introduced its SmartSorb technology that turns oil-based CBD ingredients into water-soluble ingredients and boosts bioavailability.
“SmartSorb is a special formulation which was developed specifically to improve the absorption and bioavailability of CBD. The reason that was done is that CBD itself is very difficult to absorb, if you just take it where it hasn't been modified by a special formulation, almost none of it is absorbed into the bloodstream or into the systemic circulation and this is characteristic of lots of different drugs on the pharmaceutical side. We see this all the time and we use special formulations to improve the absorption bioavailability of those drugs,” said David Chernoff, PhD, Chief Medical Officer of NextEvo Naturals. “SmartSorb was specifically developed for that purpose. It uses all natural ingredients and there's no artificial materials. These are all substances that are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) and it was specifically designed to increase the absorption and bioavailability of CBD so that you have a sufficient amount in your bloodstream for it to be able to do and have biological activity.”
