Nordic Naturals partners with Sam's Club to broaden omega-3 reach
Sam’s Club is offering consumers bulk sizes of two Nordic Naturals’ top-selling omega-3 supplements beginning in October, making them more accessible and affordable to a broader market.
Brian Terry, director of US retail sales for Nordic Naturals, said the deal is more than just growing distribution and supply.
“As we continue to expand into new retail avenues, our focus remains on delivering products that empower individuals to take charge of their health. We are confident that this collaboration with Sam’s Club stores will enable us to reach a wider audience, sharing the transformative benefits of omega-3 supplementation."
The California-based manufacturer also entered Walmart locations in May, partnering with 2,500 of its stores.
Speaking to NutraIngredients-USA earlier this year, Terry said most Americans do not know they need omega-3s.
“They do not have the grocery budget to afford the minimum omega-3 requirements sourced from food alone, and do not have access to quality omega-3 supplements.”
Partnering with Sam’s Club and Walmart is an opportunity to address financial and dietary challenges of the US population, he added.
Meeting health requirements
Omega-3 provides support for immune, brain, and heart health, although every cell in the body relies on omega-3 fatty acids to function optimally and to efficiently absorb vital nutrients. Moreover, omega 3s are instrumental in making hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls and inflammation.
US dietary guidelines have established that 450-500 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids from food or supplements are needed to meet the average daily requirement. However, 68% of adults do not consume enough omega-3s in their diet to meet their daily nutritional needs.
Nordic Naturals said its commitment to high-quality omega-3 supplements from fish oil and marine algae oil signifies an essential first step toward supporting overall health, regardless of other supplementation.
Bulk offering
For Sam’s Club, Nordic Naturals provides 1,280 mg of total omega-3s in soft gels, which is sourced from wild-caught sardines and anchovies. The supplement offers a lemon taste rather than leaving consumers with a fishy aftertaste. Ultimate Omega has won more than 10 industry awards, and ClearCut, Nielsen, and SPINS have all ranked its omega-3 formula No. 1 in the United States in recent years.
Algae Omega size is 80 count and is a vegetarian and vegan-friendly option for those with a plant-based lifestyle. At 715 mg of total omega 3s, it meets daily omega-3 EPA and DHA requirements. The supplement is also certified 100% vegetarian by the American Vegetarian Association, while being non-GMO and hexane-free.
Market overview
The demand for omega-3 fatty acids in the U.S. is projected to grow significantly over the next few years due to rising consumer awareness of omega-3 health benefits.
According to Grandview Research, the global omega-3 market was valued at $2.43 billion in 2022 and is anticipated to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8% from 2023 to 2030. This is attributable to the rising use of omega 3-based ingredients in the human diet to support mostly brain and heart health.
The report also noted that the market is witnessing continuous diversification in its product offerings as consumers seek alternatives to traditional fish oil, such as krill, flaxseed, algae and Ahiflower.
