Iovate Health Sciences-brand MuscleTech has announced the launch of two pre-workout formulations containing paraxanthine, a caffeine metabolite developed by Ingenious Ingredients.

The exclusive partnership between MuscleTech and Ingenious Ingredients for paraxanthine means MuscleTech will be the only supplement provider with access to paraxanthine for the foreseeable future, according to a press release.

Paraxanthine is a down-stream metabolite of caffeine. Indeed, about 70% of caffeine is metabolized to paraxanthine, with smaller percentages of being metabolized to theobromine and theophylline.

“This is caffeine-evolved,” said Shawn Wells, co-founder of Ingenious Ingredients (ING2). “Paraxanthine is a main metabolite of caffeine, and it allows for greater focus and energy enhancement when it comes to athletic activity and endurance.”

Speaking with NutraIngredients-USA at SupplySide West 2021, Wells explained that about one third of the population are fast metabolizers of caffeine: These are the people who can go straight to sleep after they have a cup of coffee. On the other hand, about a third of the population are slow metabolizers, and have problems with issues like headaches and arrythmia: All the side effects and very little benefits.

A study, published in Nutrients, found that a single 200 mg dose of the ingredient, which ING2 has branded enfinity, produced significant improvements in a range of cognitive measures, including memory, reaction time, and attention.

“Paraxanthine’s benefits include all of the benefits of caffeine, without the backlash,” said Raza Bashir, the Vice President of Scientific Affairs and Innovation for Iovate Health Sciences, the makers of MuscleTech. “Consumers have been looking for a better alternative to caffeine and this unique and cutting-edge metabolite is a major scientific breakthrough. Our new formulations fueled by enfinity are designed to deliver unprecedented results.”

MuscleTech’s new products are branded EuphoriQ and Burn iQ and are available via e-commerce retailers like Amazon with suggested retail prices of $59.99 (Burn iQ) and $49.99 (EuphoriQ).

ING2

Ingenious Ingredients L.P. (ING2) was founded in 2018 by Dr. Jaeger, Dr. Martin Purpura, Shawn Wells, and Kylin Liao to develop new ingredients for sports and active nutrition (muscle health), nootropics (brain health), and more.

ING2 self-affirmed the GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status for its enfinity-branded paraxanthine ingredient for use in food and beverages in 2021.
