California-based Ingredients by Nature (IBN) has acquired the Sytrinol brand, expanding its citrus ingredient portfolio.

The acquisition from Lonza includes Sytrinol’s marketing assets associated with the brand such as logos, web domains, human clinicals, patents and marketing data.

“Having worked with the Sytrinol formulation for a long time, we couldn’t be happier to have this brand underneath our umbrella of citrus-derived ingredients,” said Rob Brewster, president of IBN.

“The science speaks for itself that this is among the best available ingredients for heart health, and we look forward to discovering additional ways to innovate with Sytrinol to bring it to an expanded consumer base.”

Sytrinol, which is currently used in the formula of 20-25 products in the US, supports heart health by influencing healthy cholesterol levels, healthy LDL levels with improved LDL:HDL ratio, and healthy triglyceride levels, with measurable positive effects in as little as four weeks.

Data from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled research showed a 27% reduction in cholesterol levels, 25% reduction in LDL cholesterol levels, and 31% reduction in triglyceride levels. (Roza et al. Altern Ther Health Med, 2007, Vol. 13, No. 6, pp. 44-48.)

Synergies

IBN, a widely recognized expert in citrus ingredients, sees the addition of Sytrinol as a “great fit into its existing portfolio”. The company has actually manufactured the Sytrinol formula for many years prior to the acquisition, according to a release from IBN, including manufacturing citrus-derived polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs), a key ingredient in this newly acquired blend of citrus and palm fruit extracts.

The company is planning to explore the synergistic combination of its clinically backed lemon flavonoid brand Eriomin with Sytrinol. Eriomin, launched in 2019, delivers a tri-pronged approach to prediabetes management by helping to address insulin resistance, pro-inflammatory cytokine production and oxidative stress. By adding in Sytrinol’s heart health benefits, the combo may have even greater potential for prediabetes management and cardiovascular support, said IBN.

“We believe that the combination will be very powerful and that discovering their synergies is a big step toward satisfying demands for better long-term health, ” Brewster told NutraIngredients-USA.

“Blood sugar management and heart health are key to living a happy and healthy life, so by combining these two ingredients we are helping consumers to find a highly effective and convenient solution.”
