It is a truism in the pet supplement industry that if a supplement is useful for people there is likely an application for companion animals.

This is certainly what NutraIngredients-USA found in publishing articles for the pet supplement special edition. We spoke with companies such as ADM, NOW Foods, Nammex, Charlotte’s Web and Lonza to understand what trends are occurring in the pet industry that parallel the human supplement market.

Pet supplements may not always be the star of the supplement show: In 2023, the market was approximately $2.5 billion, a sliver compared to the human supplement market valued at nearly $54 billion. However, sales for pet supplements should grow, as pet parents are investing in nutraceuticals, party because companion animals are suffering from similar ailments as people.

As obesity plagues the American population, so too does it for pets who are also tackling some of its consequences with ailments such as tooth decay, joint issues and arthritis. There is growing demand for reinventing tried and true supplements and branching into new research to create innovative products to impact this public health issue.

This special edition explores such trends and the emerging research behind the growing supplement market for pets.

ADM positions itself as a leader in pet postbiotics: The multinational human and pet company says that after a decade of providing postbiotics for people, they are in a prime position to develop postbiotics for pets to help with more than just gut health.

Keeping pets active through better joint health: A multi-layered approach: Companies are positioning new science for collagen, CBD and other ingredients to better address pets’ needs as they age.

Pet mushroom consumption mimics human supplement trends: Mushrooms are increasing in popularity as a pet supplement because of their immune health benefits.

In the week to come, NutraIngredients-USA will publish two additional stories. One discusses vegan diets for companion animals and how research in that area informs new supplement development. The other will explore impending legislation that will impact the pet supplement industry for years to come.
