Miami-based One Innovation Labs is forging a path for new liposomal technologies.

The company’s patented liposomes serve for multivitamin, vitamin D3 and vitamin C delivery systems.

“For the last 24 years, our company has really focused on R&D,” said Pedro Perez, the company’s founder and chief scientific officer. “Our focus has always been to develop ingredients that have a very clinical response.”

One Innovation Labs liposomal products are sold in 50 countries, and its signature Liposomax delivers ingredient absorption and efficacy by producing a stable liposomal delivery capsule that encapsulates and protects the ingredient.

“We are always looking at what is the next novel step to bring to our industry,” Perez said.

Liposomes are spherical structures enclosed by a phospholipid bilayer which the body recognizes as a cell. By outsmarting the body, liposomes pass through the digestive tract without much nutrient loss and directly into the bloodstream. There they can be delivered into the body’s cells and maximize ingredient absorption more than any other nutrient encapsulation method.

Lonza partnership

PureWay-C is the lab’s leading vitamin C nutraceutical. It has been shown to outperform other leading forms of Vitamin C in terms of metabolic functions and has a 233% higher retention by the human body than any other ascorbate brands, the company said.

When examined in vitro, PureWay-C quickly affects cultured cell behavior, an indication of its rapid cellular uptake and improved activity, according to results published in Medical Science Monitor. These results have implications for better wound healing.

Perez said that only 385 mg of PureWay-C will illicit the same response as 500 mg of ascorbic acid or 500 mg of calcium ascorbate. This means more rapidly stimulated healthy neurons, more efficient nerve regeneration, a better protected immune system and effective delivery antioxidant free radical scavenging activity.

As for a manufacturing standpoint, the nutraceutical is available in several forms including a micro-encapsulated powder.

Delivering vitamin C more efficiently and effectively to the body was one of the reasons why Swiss multinational Lonza recently partnered with One Innovation Labs.

Lonza’s Duocap dual release capsules enable typically incompatible ingredients to be combined into one single dose in an aesthetically pleasing format. It helps protect acid-sensitive and moisture-sensitive ingredients to ensure optimal ingredient delivery.

By delivering Liposomax in Lonza’s Duocap dual release capsules, it improves optimal ingredient delivery and enhances the biological activity of liposomal vitamin C, according to Zain Saiyed, director, head of global product development and innovation at Lonza.

“Lonza would like to further the partnership and help One Innovation Labs fuel their innovation pipeline to accelerate their growth in the marketplace,” he added.

New applications

One Innovation Labs is not limiting liposomal technology to oral applications. Perez said that the company is applying its technology to medical device development.

Perez explained that his company is working on a tool that will deliver ingredients at surgical or injury sites to protect patients from inflammation and enhance immunity.

Beyond health, the team is exploring horticultural solutions such as a spray that delivers nutraceuticals to help a plant grow better and without disease.

“We prove that we can bring global benefits for every consumer,” Perez said. “That is what we do as a company.”
