Nutrition and biotechnology company PanTheryx has launched a gut health supplement that reportedly provides immediate relief and lasting support for the side effects of GLP-1 drugs.

Relesium is designed to alleviate gastrointestinal issues and aid in gut health for individuals who may sometimes experience nausea, diarrhea, constipation and bloating from GLP-1 weight-loss medications, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and other semaglutides and tirzepatides.

“We’re committed to providing real solutions that address the pervasive gut health challenges faced by millions of people, including those challenges brought on by GLP-1 drugs,” said Tom Feeley, CEO of PanTheryx.

It is estimated that over 34 million Americans take GLP-1 medications.

How it works

Relesium is unlike other gut health products on the market, Feeley said. It is not a probiotic or digestive enzyme and uses natural ingredients such as egg and bovine colostrum, a nutrient-dense fluid that is released from the breast after mammals give birth.

Feeley noted that Relesium is appealing because it acts through multiple mechanisms to stabilize the gut mucosa, providing micro-nutrients at a time of calorie deficit and addressing dysbiosis (abnormal gut flora) through its antibodies and other antimicrobial factors.

The risk of dysbiosis is much higher when taking GLP-1s. These drugs slow gut transit, which encourages the buildup of unwanted microbes. In some situations, this may lead to the development of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth which can cause gut symptoms overlapping with irritable bowel syndrome, Feeley said. Retained digestive enzymes and bile may also cause irritation to the bowel lining.

According to PanTheryx, Relesium neutralizes harmful pathogens, enhances nutrient absorption and supports a balanced gut microbiome.

Research on egg as a standalone nutraceutical for a variety of clinical conditions, including infectious diarrhea, has occurred for many years.

“We at Pantheryx have been examining its value when given alone and when combined with bovine colostrum, which also has a strong evidence base for efficacy against a wide range of gut-related issues,” Feeley explained. “We considered that combining the two products brought complementary protective molecules from both components.”

PanTheryx said Relesium will be an umbrella gut health brand that will soon launch products for the additional supplement needs of individuals on GLP-1s. It will be designed to help people with other gut-related issues such as GERD and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) damage, as well as for the digestive health and regularity of companion animals.

Available through its website, Relesium costs $44.99 and will be sold through retailers soon.

“While other formulas are untested or lack scientific backing to ensure they provide support for side effects, Relesium stands apart,” said Dr. Harry Oken, an internist, adjunct professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. “I’ve seen Relesium address the root causes of my patients’ GI discomfort, allowing them to quickly feel their best while administering GLP-1 medications.”
