Event to delve into the importance of the microbiome in sports nutrition
Titled The Opportunity of the Microbiome, the session is scheduled for Feb. 4 at 11 AM Central time. The session features content matter experts from academia and industry.

Kicking off the session is a keynote presentation from Chad Kerksick, PhD, associate professor of exercise science at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. Dr Kerksick will lay out the extensive and still developing science in this area. It has been known for some time now, for example, that the microbiome makeup of athletes is different from that of less active, yet still healthy individuals. A landmark study done in Ireland showed that rugby players there had overall a more diverse microbiome makeup than did controls, for example.
But confounding factors about in microbiome studies, experts have noted. Could the rugby players’ guts have become more diverse just because of more close contact with fellow competitors? Or just because they got more dirt in their mouths?
Nevertheless, researchers in the field believe that ways to control for these confounders are being found as more studies are done and more experience is gained. Recent studies suggest that microbiome manipulation via probiotics supplementation can affect endpoints such as short chain fatty acid availability, muscle glycogen content, antioxidant enzyme activity, gastrointestinal permeability, and lactate metabolism.
Protein absorption session and panel lineup
Prof. Kerksick’s presentation will delve into these ideas and more. Following his session, Dr. Ralf Jaeger, PhD, will layout a hot new area of research that shows that a specific probiotic strain can improve the absorption of a specific protein. If the research is replicated with other proteins and strains, it could open up a whole new area of product development. Probiotic supercharged protein, anyone?
A panel discussion will follow those two sessions. The panel will feature Nathan Price, CEO Onegevity Health, Paul Schulick, CEO of For the Biome, Paul Cotter, PhD, of the Teagasc Food Research Centre in Ireland and Allison McDonald, PhD, Senior Research Scientist with KGK Science.
